In a very welcome move, Mars (owner of brands such as Dolmio and Uncle Ben's) has announced it will put health warnings on some of its foods. Products which are too high in fat, sugar and salt will be marked 'occasional', and should only be eaten once a week. Other products marked 'everyday' will apparently be reformulated over the next 5 years to reduce their fat, salt and sugar content.
Campaigners have long been demanding that manufacturers take more responsibility for tackling the obesity crisis and the growing cost of other health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, some cancers and tooth decay. So is this a clever pre-emptive move by Mars? Or will it be perceived as a gimmick? Tam Fry of the National Obesity Forum called the move 'imaginative'! But apparently it is part of Mars' global Health and Wellbeing Ambition, promoting healthier choices for consumers.
If you're rapidly going off the idea of Dolmio, give our own '5 Pasta Sauce', a try. Easy to make, nutritious and delicious, it contains ALL five portions of your 5-a-day. The recipe is here on our website and in our book 'Thrive on Five'. And if convenience is what you're after, make plenty, as it freezes brilliantly.
