Old proverbs like this probably have some foundation in science, somewhere in their history - and researchers have now shown that eating an apple a day can actually keep the pharmacist away. A study of 8,400 people showed that those who ate an apple everyday were 27 per cent less likely to go to a pharmacy for prescription drugs. The research concluded that apples could limit the severity of illnesses so that prescribed medicines were less often needed. Over-the-counter remedies could be used instead to fight off bugs. Those conducting the study also suggest that if everyone in Britain ate an apple a day, the NHS could save £4billion a year!
