Confused about what counts towards your 5-a-day? Research shows 33% cannot correctly identify five portions with parents believing jacket potatoes, mashed potatoes and crisps count towards the target. Some also think that vitamin pills count too. Fruit Heroes carried out the research.
Government guidelines recommend we eat 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables each day. One portion for an adult is generally 80g and fresh, frozen and canned vegetables count. Potatoes do not count but sweet potatoes do. Children should aim to eat 5 different varieties each day but they do not require the full 80g.
There are a few exceptions but for a full description of what counts, go to: NHS Choices.
